Chasing The Tides
2021 | Urethane, Printed QR code, single-channel video | life-size
Through the joy of discovery in the subway station, Chasing The Tides imposes a resonant experience about tides and trains, waves and people. The work consists of 5 plastic-cast starfishes spreading across CTA subway stations in Chicago. Each of them conceals a QR code linked to a video of moving tides while juxtaposing time of train, tides, and reality.
The work is both inspired by, and referring to “costal foraging”, an agriculture activity takes place on east coast of China where fishers make livings on following the rhythm of tides and gather seafood from the beach within the intertidal zone. The artist ponders about what it means to be living in the rhythm of an urban environment, versus living in a rural coast with an economic dependence on the nature.
